There are many foreigners choosing to work as foreign teachers in China. But it’s not that you can come to China to be a teacher just by knowing a foreign language. To apply for a Chinese work visa as a teacher who teaches a foreign language, you should meet the following requirements.
Basic requirements
- At least 18 years old
- In good health
- With no criminal record
- Have a definite employer in China
- Possess the professional skills or appropriate level of knowledge necessary to perform the work
Language requirements
Individuals should teach their native language.
The language taught by most foreign teachers is English. There are 40 countries and regions that are recognized and can obtain a work visa as an English teacher in China. The list of these countries and regions is as follows：
Degree requirements
Obtained a bachelor’s degree or above.
Relevant experience and qualifications
In principle, a foreign teacher should have at least 2 years’ working experience in language education. But there are 2 more alternative options if a foreign teacher doesn’t have 2 years’ experience.
- Obtained a bachelor’s degree or above in education, language, or teacher training major.
- Obtained a teaching qualification in his/her own country or obtained an international language teaching certificate that meets the requirements, such as TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, etc.
If you fulfill these requirements, you can apply for a work visa as a foreign teacher. Here are the general application procedures:
- Apply for notification letter of Chinese work permit online. (While you are outside of China)
- Go to the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate to apply for Z visa to enter China.
- Present in person at the local police station to complete a Registration Form of Temporary Residence within 24 hours of entering China.
- Apply for Chinese work permit online.
- Apply for Chinese residence permit at the Public Security Bureau where your company is located.
