China piloted the use of digital driver’s licenses in the cities of Tianjin, Chengdu and Suzhou from June 1 this year. Drivers can download mobile app “Traffic Management 12123” to apply for digital driver’s licenses, China’s official traffic management platform.
The digital driver’s licenses can be used in such scenarios as checkpoint inspection, processing traffic violations, dealing with accidents, driver license-related affairs, car rental, insurance affairs, driving qualification and others.
Digital driver’s licenses and the paper ones have the same legal validity and nationwide recognition.
As a foreign resident, what can I do to apply for a digital driver’s license?
Step 1: Download the“Traffic Management 12123”mobile app, click“user registration”, find the“type of document”segment, then choose“F foreign personnel personal identification document” and then “other foreign personnel personal identification document”. Follow the instructions and enter info such as document (passport) number, name, mobile phone number, province and city of registration and password.
Step 2: Enter mobile phone number and password, then hit “login”.
Step 3: On the front page, click “online driver license”and then press “take photo”on the subsequent page.You need to enlist someone else to take the picture for you. Or, you may also opt to “choose from album”and upload a photo taken within the past six months.
Step 4: Then click “confirm” to finish the application process. Application result will be available after one work day, and you should receive a push notification from the app.
Step 5: After successful application, simply log in to the“Traffic Management 12123” mobile app to find the online driver license by going to the“my driver license”segment or“service center” segment , then click “online driver license”.
